Asian Religious vs. Australian Aboriginal Beliefs

The Aboriginal people living in Australia have been living there for over 60,000 years. They are often described as having one of the oldest continuously living cultures in the world, and at the time of Australia’s European occupation, over 700 Indigenous Aboriginal languages were being spoken in Australia. The Aboriginal people believe in the idea of Dreaming beings. These beings take the form of either humans or animals and could change their forms. These beings are credited by the Aboriginal people with creating the first people. The Dreaming beings gave the Aboriginal people their way of life, so the Aboriginal people believe that there is no need to change their traditional way of life and simply follow the path that the mythical beings gave them. This is the reason why Aboriginal culture today is very similar to the way it has been for many years. They continue playing the didgeridoo, like their ancestors, and continue honoring Uluru (or Ayer’s Rock). Uluru is an example of what the Aboriginal people believe is evidence of the Dreaming beings; they believe that at one point, the rock was a Dreaming being that transformed into the mountain, and they tell tales and stories to their children about the rock that teach them lessons for their future.

In Asia, there are many different religions around the continent. The most popular of these religions include Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Shintoism, Hinduism, and Taoism, as well as some countries being majority-irreligious or following folk religions. Buddhism and Taoism are widely practiced in China, Islam is most popular in Indonesia, Shintoism is most popular in Japan, and Hinduism is most popular in India. Asia is a very large continent and so many different religions are followed, but mainly the religions shape the way the people go through their daily lives, what holidays are celebrated, and their morals and values.

The similarities between the Aboriginal people in Australia and the many different religions in Asia center around how all these belief systems generally teach their followers how they should live their daily lives and provide teachings to help guide their followers. In both areas, these beliefs have been passed down through generations and continue traditions across generations as well. In particular, the Aboriginal beliefs and the beliefs of Asian folk religions, as well as the beliefs of Buddhism, are closely connected with nature. In both, it is believed that people should respect nature, with the Aboriginal people having a strong spiritual connection to the land.

In comparison, in Asia, it is popular for there to be a singular founder of a religion, whereas in Australia, the Aboriginal people believe in multiple Dreaming beings. In general, most Asian religions also worship a God or multiple gods, while the Aboriginal belief system centers on their ancestral beings. Finally, most Aboriginal people hold ceremonies outdoors on their sacred land (Uluru being one of the most famous), while many Asian religions practice their faith in temples and mosques, among other places.

The belief systems of the Aboriginal people of Australia and the religions in Asia are very similar and very different in many ways. Both traditions are beautiful and highlight how amazing all these cultures are and how unique the people are who practice these traditions.
