Paths of Enlightenment: Exploring the history of Asia’s Great Religions

An attempt to understand how ancient traditions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism have shaped civilizations, inspired profound philosophies, and continue to guide billions in their search for meaning today.

Many things in this world can delight the senses—listening to music, tasting a new dish, or mastering a new skill. Yet few experiences awaken all of them at once. For me, that experience is travel. The vivid sights, unfamiliar sounds, and even the distinct scents of new places are invigorating, but it is the deeper immersion into another culture that truly stirs my soul.

To step into a different way of life is to see the world anew. Nothing enriches that experience more than learning about the traditions and values that shape a society—especially its beliefs. For many communities, religion forms the heart of cultural identity, serving as the foundation upon which entire civilizations are built.

Having been fortunate to travel extensively, thanks to my parents’ shared love of exploration, I have developed a deep appreciation for the cultures and faiths of diverse societies. It has been both a privilege and a joy to study the religions of the places I have visited, as well as those I hope to encounter in the future. In these journal entries, I reflect on what I have learned about the spiritual traditions of different lands and the ways they shape the lives of their people.

For each religion below, I have tried to determine:

o What are its main beliefs?

o How is this religion practiced?

o When did it arrive in this country? How?

o What has the general history of this religion been like in this country?

o How has it impacted the society / politics / economics of this country?

o How has the society / politics / economics of this country impacted the religion?

o How has it interacted with other religions in this country?

o What does the future hold for this religion in this country? Is it on the rise? Is it

on the decline?
